A student leader from a British university’s racial equality organization tweeted out that all white people can “geddit” as protesters rioted in London.
Jason Osamede Okundaye, the president of Cambridge University’s Black and Minority Ethnic society, allegedly made the comments on his Twitter account Friday night as people rioted over the death of Rashan Charles, a black man, reports the International Business Times UK.
“ALL white people are racist. White middle class, white working class, white men, white women, white gays, white children,” Okundaye told his followers. “They can all geddit.”
Okundaye also seemed to give tacit support to the Dalston, London rioters. The protesters, angry over Charles’ death after police chased him, marched through the streets wreaking havoc. They burned various objects, assaulted officers and tried to block the roads.
“Watching these middle-class white people despair over black people protesting in their colonised Dalston is absolutely delicious,” Okundaye tweeted. He also posted a picture directed to “those Dalston rioters” that congratulated them for their actions.
By the time the riots were over, police said that “vehicles, a cash machine and a number of windows” had been damaged. An officer and a 17-year-old teen were also injured during the protests.
A spokesperson for Cambridge University said that the college would be looking in to the matter, while a Cambridgeshire police representative said they too would be investigating the tweets.
“We are aware of these matters, and they are in hand. I can confirm that police are investigating the incident at this time,” the police spokesperson said.
Okundaye said that his tweets have been taken out of context and that he was not calling for violence against white people.
“My tweet about all white people being racist was pulled out of context and separate to my tweets in support of the Dalston protests,” Okundaye said. “My tweets on white racism had been said before, in response to people acting as if racism is exclusive to working class people.”
