Climate activist and former Vice President Al Gore’s newest flick, “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth To Power,” has created a huge rift in online reviews, getting nearly equal parts praised and trashed, FiveThirtyEight reports.
The movie’s divisiveness stems more from the politics associated with Gore and his activism for man-made climate change rather than the quality of the movie itself, according to FiveThirtyEight.
In August of 2016, 70 percent of Hillary Clinton’s supporters believed climate change is caused by human activity. Alternatively, 77 percent of Donald Trump’s supporters thought climate change is due to natural weather patterns or wasn’t happening, according to the Pew Research Center.
When Gore ran for president in 2000, he won the vote of 51 million Americans. He also lost the vote of another 54.4 million who voted for other candidates.
Ratings for “An Inconvenient Sequel” are similar to the near equal split of the United States on Gore and his politics. The movie has a 5.5 rating after 2,787 IMDb users scored it on a scale of one to 10, with the vast majority of votes cast being either a one or a 10, according to September 8 IMBd data.
The film’s mediocre score was decided before the movie was widely released to the public. Sixty-two percent of IMBd’s reviews of the movie were already in by August 4, the date of the wide release. As ticket sales increased after the movie was available to more people, the rating barely changed, FiveThirtyEight reports.
