U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp said Monday that President Trump plans to visit the territory “within the next six or seven days.”
The Virgin Islands were slammed by Hurricane Irma, which has caused widespread damage and at least four deaths. A White House spokeswoman told The Daily Caller that no travel plans to the Virgin Islands are final yet.
Gov. Mapp said the president wants “to see firsthand the damages of the territory, and to get on-ground reports of the federal operation, to ensure that the people of the Virgin Islands are receiving recovery as fast as humanly possible, and that the assets of the federal government were being appropriately deployed.”
Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert was quite confident Monday about the recovery efforts in the territory. “I am doubling down on my assertion that this is the best integrated, full-scale response effort in our nation’s history,” Bossert said at a White House press briefing. “This has been a large event, and you’re going to see a lot of positive stories from it.”
Part of the response includes what Bossert described as the largest naval flotilla operation “in our nation’s history.”
