Former GOP Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore is trying to stop state officials from certifying his opponent Doug Jones because of alleged “systematic voter fraud.”
Moore filed a complaint Wednesday in the U.S. circuit court of Alabama, arguing voter fraud caused him to lose to Democrat Jones in the Dec. 12 special Senate election, The New York Times reports. He also claims that state election authorities did not do enough to snuff out voter misconduct.
The former Alabama Supreme Court justice’s lawyers argue that if Jones is certified before state officials thoroughly investigate, it will cause Moore “irreparable harm” and will ultimately be denying Moore his right to run in a free and “fair election.”
Alabama state election officials are adamant that no voter fraud occurred in the election. Many of the state officials, including the state’s top election official, cast their ballots for Moore.
Moore’s ultimate goal is to stop state officials from certifying Jones Thursday afternoon.
Weeks after he lost the election, Moore has still yet to concede to Jones even after President Donald Trump called on him to do so earlier this month.
Jones defeated Moore by a fairly narrow margin of 22,000 votes.
