I had no idea what to expect from this new mini-series about one of the darkest moments in recent American history, but I was blown away. The first episode focuses a lot on the events at Ruby Ridge, and the FBI and ATF’s handling of the standoff with Randy Weaver.
They use the standoff that left Weaver’s wife and son dead as the backdrop for the way the ATF handled the Waco siege. Viewers are left at the end of the first episode with the ATF setting up surveillance on the compound, and you can tell that the main event is right around the corner.
The show also paints Branch Davidian leader David Koresh as a sympathetic character. I don’t know how long this will go. You could already see the tension building by the end of the episode between him and other Davidian men.
Taylor Kitsch is extremely convincing as Koresh. There were moments when I totally forgot I was watching Tim Riggins from “Friday Night Lights.” He knocked it out of the park.
Michael Shannon as the FBI negotiator Gary Noesner is also great casting. Shannon comes off as believable, empathetic and not trigger happy.
It’s going to be very interesting to see how this show progresses and if it will take sides on the infamous incident that led to the deaths of many women and children. So far, it looks like it will side with Koresh and the Davidians, but we still have five episodes to go. I can’t wait to see the media’s reaction if the FBI is framed as the villains by the time the show is done. I have a feeling many people won’t like that at all.
Overall, it was an outstanding premiere episode, and you should check it out Wednesday nights on the Paramount Network.
