Part of what makes America the greatest country on earth is how we honor our men and women in uniform. And while every person who has served our country with bravery and dignity deserves recognition, there are some who go above and beyond the call of duty. Only a select few in a generation are awarded the highest honor of the United States military.

And although they should be celebrated every day, the U.S. formally recognizes all Medal Of Honor recipients on March 25. Their valor is unsurpassed and our country is far safer and better off with them in the line of duty.

Only 3,517 people have ever received the Medal Of Honor since our country’s founding. Many of them have been honored posthumously. In order to earn the Medal Of Honor you must go well above and beyond the call of duty. Here are seven American heroes who did exactly that, and we honor their action and sacrifices.
