A Wisconsin university is telling students to stop saying “illegal” when describing immigrants, according to a Monday report.
The diversity and inclusion department of Marquette University calls the term “illegal,” when applied to immigrants, “inaccurate” and “dehumanizing,” reported Campus Reform.
“When referring to an individual who is residing in the United Stated without authorization from the federal government, we would encourage you to drop the ‘i-word’ in favor of terms such as ‘undocumented’ or ‘unauthorized’ immigrant,” the university says on its “Undocumented Student Terminology” guide.
Marquette instead urges students to use “undocumented” or “unauthorized” when describing illegal aliens.
“Many people also live in households that are considered ‘mixed status,'” the school informs students. “A mixed status family is one in which at least one member is residing legally in the United States and at least one member is not. Often, this includes children born in the United States to unauthorized immigrant parents. There are more than 16 million mixed status households in the United States.”
Marquette uses stricter language on its College of Education portal, suggesting that professors inform students that terms like “illegal aliens,” “illegal immigrants,” and “illegals” “will not be tolerated.”
The school argues that “illegal” is inaccurate because existing in the U.S. without a visa is not a criminal breach of the law.
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Marquette for comment but received none in time for press.
