New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and primary rival Cynthia Nixon are battling to secure their spot as the frontrunner in the next gubernatorial election, arguing over who’s more dedicated to women and abortion rights.

Cuomo has asked the state legislature to pass the Reproductive Health Act so abortion rights will be codified into state law. His request, along with statements affirming his invigorated commitment to protecting reproductive healthcare, follow Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court and subsequent nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

“We do not have a New York State law that provides the protections of Roe v. Wade,” Cuomo said, blaming Senate Republicans for the previous failure to pass the Reproductive Health Act, according to The New York Times.

Cuomo’s gubernatorial rival alleges he’s not very committed to women’s reproductive rights because he has long displayed tolerance toward pro-life Senate Republicans. He has “made the choice to side with Republicans again and again, and now our reproductive freedom is at risk with Donald Trump in the White House and Roe v. Wade hanging in the balance,” Nixon said in a Tuesday video.

She compares clips of her own comments lauding the importance of women’s rights to frivolous clips of Cuomo in an attempt to shred his credibility among female voters. (RELATED: New York State Gubernatorial Candidate Cynthia Nixon Says She Is A Democratic Socialist)

Nixon garnered fame from her acting career, starring as Miranda Hobbes in the HBO series “Sex and the City.”

“It is time for Governor Cuomo to stop gas-lighting New York’s women,” Nixon added.

Cuomo did not let Nixon’s words rest long before addressing her attacks against him.

“Cynthia Nixon can produce and star in as many silly, fact-free videos as she wants,” Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said, TheNYT reported.

“The governor is focused on uniting Democrats to fight against Donald Trump and his destructive anti-woman agenda,” Smith added.

The two will square off in New York’s gubernatorial election Nov. 6.
