Italian politicians accused Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of encouraging racial violence in Italy after an unidentified assailant threw an egg at a black Italian soccer player Monday.

Salvini faced accusations of encouraging hate after a man threw an egg at soccer player Daisy Osakue on the street in Turin, The Guardian reported. She sustained an eye injury that requires her to wear an eyepatch until it’s healed.

“I don’t want to play the sexism or racism card, but people should be able to go out without someone attacking you out of the blue,” Osakue said, according to The Guardian. “They are just cowards.”

Italy’s former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called attacks against people of different skin colors an emergency that needs to be addressed immediately in a tweet(RELATED: Salvini: Italy’s Former Prime Minister Let The Country Get Overrun By Thousands Of Refugees)

The Secretary of Italy’s Democratic Party Maurizio Martina tweeted that people who deny that racism is growing in Italy are essentially complying with it.

“Is there a racism emergency in Italy? Don’t be stupid,” Salvini said in response, according to The Guardian. “Certainly the mass immigration allowed by the left hasn’t helped matters.”

Osakue should be able to recover from her injury in time to play in August at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, doctors told The Guardian.
