New York Yankees co-owner Hank Steinbrenner died Tuesday at the age of 63 after battling a long-term illness.

“Hank was a genuine and gentle spirit who treasured the deep relationship he formed with those closes to him,” the Steinbrenner family said in a statement released by the organization. “He was introduced to the Ynakkes organization at a very young age, and his love for sports and competition continued to burn brightly throughout his career.”

Hank Steinbrenner was George’s oldest son, and is survived by his younger brother Hal, who also serves as the organization’s co-chairman. This is a terribly sad day for baseball and the sports world. Few families have meant more to the sports world than the Steinbrenner family, and our prayers are with them and the Yankees during this tough time.
