Morning Joe co-host Willie Geist, guest co-host Eddie Glaude and The Guardian’s Hugo Lowell suggested Wednesday that former President Donald Trump wanted to sell classified documents to foreign governments.
The panel was discussing Lowell’s recent report on Trump’s claim to executive privilege regarding the documents confiscated by the FBI. The report claims that Trump admitted some of the documents are official records meant to be handed over to the National Archives by invoking executive privilege protections.
“Why did [Trump] want the documents?” Glaude asked. “What’s the purpose?”
Glaude then suggested Trump might want to “monetize” the documents. “He’s like an expert-level grifter. I mean, the danger here is out of bounds, it seems to me.”
Geist laid out Trump’s argument for keeping the documents before co-host Mike Barnicle appeared to suggest Trump wanted to sell in the information to foreign powers. (RELATED: Biden White House Was Involved With DOJ Probe Into Classified Trump Documents, Memos Reveal)
“Given his nature, given his history, given his lack of character, you can’t help but think he’d look at a document and wonder ‘Wonder what they’d pay to know this in Riyadh?” Barnicle said.
Geist floated the possibility, claiming “nothing is beneath [Trump].”
Trump filed a motion Monday requesting a special master be appointed to independently oversee the review of the materials taken from his Mar-a-Lago home. The former president’s lawyers requested a federal judge suspend the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) search of “seized materials” until the special master is appointed, arguing the government failed to provide “any reason for the unprecedented, general search of his home.”
Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart is considering allowing a redacted version of the search warrant affidavit to be unsealed, as Trump’s lawyers demand transparency. Reinhart, who signed off on the warrant, told the DOJ they have until Thursday to explain why the affidavit should be kept concealed.
