The Washington Post endorsed a Republican candidate for his “responsible” style of governing that would ensure investment returns for Maryland residents, according to a recent opinion piece.

Harford County executive Barry Glassman was endorsed over Democratic Del. Brooke E. Lierman because he is a traditional Republican who is against “the GOP’s MAGA wing” and would hold the position with a restrained approach compared to Leirman, who they feel will leverage the tax fund to reward companies who align with her priorities, the Post said. Glassman’s restrained approach would align with the state’s laws and constitution; furthermore, he presents the “only realistic chance” for any Republican to win a statewide office in this election cycle. (RELATED: Trump-Endorsed Democrat Wins Nomination In Heated New York Primary)

A single political party in charge of any state is “a recipe for immoderation and poor governance,” the Post said. The Maryland Legislature has been controlled by Democrats for many years, but Gov. Larry Hogan, a moderate Republican, acted as a check to the Democrat party in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-to-1.

Hogan “shunned” the other Republican candidates running for statewide office, but believes Glassman has the right perspective for comptroller, the Post said. As comptroller, Glassman would oversee 1,000 employees and hold the power to “make or break” major contracts for the state such as highways and rail lines.

A key role of the comptroller is to oversee the state’s pension fund which currently sits at $68 million as of this year, the Post reported. Glassman “would focus not on politics but on investment returns that ensure benefits for tens of thousands of retired teachers, state police, judges and others.”

In comparison, the Post believes Lierman will “leverage the fund to advance her policy views, directing investments toward or away from companies depending on their priorities.”

Despite their endorsement for Glassman, the Post stated that they believe both candidates are “capable,” yet Glassman’s “meat-and-potatoes” style of governing fits the comptroller position.

The Post did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
