‘Dobbs Mirage’: Chris Wallace Says Dems Didn’t Pay Enough Attention To Inflation

CNN’s Chris Wallace said Tuesday that Democrats were disillusioned by the weight of the Dobbs decision and failed to adequately address the priorities of voters.

CNN political director David Chalian reported on a network exit poll that found 32% of voters ranked inflation as their top issue, while abortion came in second at 27%. A majority of those polled told CNN they were experiencing either moderate or severe financial hardships.

CNN’s Jake Tapper called the data “brutal.”

“I mean, again, 75% of the country says the condition of the nation’s economy is not so good or poor, 78% of those in the exit polls say that inflation has caused their family severe or moderate hardship. Again, brutal,” Tapper said.

Wallace chimed in, saying Democrats misjudged how important the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization would be to voters as the U.S. experiences record-high inflation rates.

“I am surprised that abortion turns out to be not the most important issue for so many people. But Democrats, last time I checked, had spent 10 times more on advertising on abortion than they had on inflation, and I think that will look back — I mean clearly there was a Dobbs mirage,” Wallace said. “They thought the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade was going to be a silver bullet and it was going to carry them to victory, but it turns out inflation was the key issue.”

A recent Morning Consult/Politico poll found 93% of voters are concerned with inflation and three out of four Democrats said the economy would play a role in their voting decisions. The poll also found that 46% of voters trusted Republicans in Congress to handle inflation while just 37% trusted Democrats.
