A Calhoun, Georgia, child allegedly shot himself in the head after reportedly finding a handgun behind his home.
Calhoun Police responded to a call reporting a gunshot at around 3 a.m. on Nov. 5, WSBTV reported. The 6-year-old boy accidentally shot himself after he found the weapon behind his apartment complex and mistook it for a toy, according to the outlet. Olmstead told his mother that he had found a “toy” after they had gone outside to let their dog out, WRGA reported. The mother told police she did not think anything of it, but after returning inside, the child went into his mother’s room, where she heard a shot and found her son on the floor with a bullet in his head, according to the outlet.
The weapon was identified as a 9mm Tauras, the outlet reported.
The incident is still under investigation, Calhoun Police Chief Tony Pyle stated, according to the Calhoun Times.
