A SWAT team reportedly killed a Grammy-winning recording engineer in Nashville on Thursday afternoon.
Mark Capps, 54, who had lived and worked in the Nashville music scene for 35 years, was reportedly shot and killed after a SWAT team was called to his home, according to Variety. Capps was wanted on two counts of aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping involving his wife and adult stepdaughter.
“Just after the arrest warrants were issued, SWAT was preparing in the event he barricaded himself inside,” a police spokesperson told News Channel 5. “He came to the door with a gun in hand. At that point, he was fatally shot. We have since learned there were cameras monitoring the outside of the home. He may have well seen them outside the residence. They were in SWAT gear and clearly marked to him as members of the police department.”
The SWAT team member reportedly shot at Capps when he reportedly brandished a gun while standing in his doorway, Variety noted.

Capps was the son of iconic Grand Ole Opry guitarist and Musicians Hall of Fame member Jimmy Capps, according to Variety. The senior Capps died in 2020, and his son, the younger Capps’ brother, died at the start of 2023, two days before the SWAT shooting. He has worked with huge names in entertainment, including Big & Rich, Blake Shelton, and more, according to News Channel 5. He won his Grammy for best polka album four years in a row between 2005 and 2008, while working with Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra, according to the official website.
