President Joe Biden’s approval rating reached its highest level since June due to a gradual increase in support over the past few months, but his rating remains low by historic measurements, a Reuters-Ipsos poll published Wednesday shows.
Biden’s approval rating is up to 42%, a slight uptick from 41% in February, as inflation steadily decreases and job growth remains stronger than expected. Eighty-one percent of Democrats approve of Biden’s performance, starkly contrasting with the 10% of Republicans who approve of the president, according to the poll results. Biden’s approval rating was measured at 42% in early June 2022 and declined to 36% by the end of the month, previous Reuters polls showed. Presidents do not typically experience such prolonged periods of low approval, according to Reuters. Still, Biden’s lowest approval rating was 3% higher than former President Trump’s lowest mark of 33% in December 2017.
Inflation has dropped from 9.1% to 6.4% year over year since June 2022, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Job growth has remained unexpectedly strong despite rising interest rates, and unemployment fell to its lowest in over 40 years in January.
President Biden announced his 2024 fiscal year budget Tuesday, headlined by proposals to increase taxes on the wealthy and shore up Medicare benefits.
Biden, 80, is widely expected to run for reelection despite his advanced age. He is being challenged by liberal author Marianne Williamson for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.
The Reuters poll surveyed 1,023 adults in a nationally representative sample with a +/- 3% margin of error.
