A man searching for shed deer antlers in Kansas on Saturday uncovered human skeletal remains instead.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and Allen County Sheriff’s Office are working to investigate the death of an unknown individual whose remains were found Saturday evening near the town of Humboldt, according to a press release from KBI. Law enforcement were called to the area on Saturday shortly before 6 p.m. by a man who was searching for deer antlers, and stumbled upon the human remains.
Due to the degree of degradation on the body, a positive identification has yet to be made by law enforcement and no further details were provided on the scene. The process of identification is expected to take longer than a typical case as a result of the condition, KBI noted in the release.

Law enforcement did not note whether the remains were male or female, nor if they were linked to any ongoing missing persons cases in the area. One news outlet suggested that the remains may belong to a missing Iola man, Dennis Jay Lushbough Jr., whose van was found in 2017 within a mile of where the remains were uncovered. An autopsy is scheduled to take place soon, and the investigation is ongoing throughout the area, ABC News reported.
