The St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers squared off Sunday, with the Brewers getting the 6-1 win to bring them to 7-2 on the season, but it would be a Cardinal who stole the show.
During the fourth inning, St. Louis rookie Jordan Walker knocked an RBI single off of Milwaukee pitcher Freddy Peralta up the middle of the field, which extended his hitting streak to nine games and put him in absolute historic company.
Walker, who is only 20 years old, has now hit safely in all nine games of action this season. Only two players in history have accomplished this feat while 20 or younger — Eddie Murphy (1912 Philadelphia Athletics) at 12 games and Ted Williams (1939 Boston Red Sox) at nine games.
Walker will attempt to extend his nine-game hitting streak to 10 when the Cardinals face off against the Colorado Rockies Monday night. He will be tasked against Rockies pitcher Germán Márquez. If Walker gets a hit against Márquez, he will then join Murphy as the only two players in MLB history (aged 20 or younger) to start their careers off with a 10-game hitting streak.
