Disgraced former Biden Energy Department (DOE) official Sam Brinton agreed to undergo a mental health evaluation as part of an adult diversion program for an alleged luggage theft in Minneapolis, Fox9 reports.
Brinton must also write a letter of apology to the victim, return any stolen property and complete three days of community service for the adult diversion program, the outlet reported. Brinton is an LGBTQ activist who identifies as non binary and worked as the DOE’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition. The adult diversion program is an opportunity for the defendant to be held accountable while potentially having the case dismissed, a Hennepin County spokesperson told Fox5.
Brinton appeared remotely Monday at a Hennepin County hearing for allegedly stealing luggage at Minneapolis-St. Paul international airport in Sep. 2022. Brinton was released without bail following an initial hearing for the alleged Minneapolis luggage theft incident. The hearing came after Brinton pleaded no contest on April 11 for stealing luggage at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. Security footage caught Brinton taking a woman’s luggage in the Vegas airport and Brinton became a suspect in the case when the Minneapolis allegation became public.
Brinton was let go by the DOE in December when Las Vegas and Minneapolis authorities charged Brinton for the alleged luggage thefts. Brinton’s role entailed overseeing nuclear waste programs for the department.
