Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador asked Mexican-American voters to not support Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, according to Reuters.
Lopez Obrador made the comment in response to Abbott recently erecting a floating barrier of buoys along the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass Texas, according to Reuters. Mexico’s incoming foreign minister, Alicia Barcena, recently said the barrier violates a water treaty and that she’d send inspectors to investigate the situation. “We don’t have to do much, just tell our compatriots not to vote for the governor of Texas or for lawmakers of the Republican Party who support these measures,” Lopez Obrador said during a press conference, according to Reuters.

The Mexican president also previously criticized Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running for president in 2024, and called on Hispanic voters to not support him because of his efforts to “persecute” migrants.
“I ask the Hispanics in Florida not to give one single vote [to Ron DeSantis]. Do not vote for those who persecute migrants,” he said at a May press briefing.

“President López Obrador has stood idly by as Mexican drug cartels run rampant and profit off the chaos of this border crisis, smuggling in deadly drugs like fentanyl, as illegal immigrants from over 150 countries surge across the border from Mexico into Texas,” Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris told the Daily Caller News Foundation in response to Lopez Obrador’s statement.
“Texas is taking historic action to respond to President Biden’s unprecedented border crisis, as his open border policies allow record-high levels of illegal immigrants, deadly drugs, and weapons to flood into our state and country. Under Operation Lone Star, Texas has allocated more than $9 billion to hold the line, deploying thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers, busing migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities, installing marine floating barriers to deter illegal crossings, and building our own border wall. Until Presidents Biden and López Obrador do their jobs and secure the border, Texas will continue stepping up to protect Texans and respond to this crisis created by their open border policies,” Mahaleris said.
