Violence escalated over Labor Day weekend in at least four U.S. cities as nearly 100 people were shot over the span of four days, according to multiple reports.

Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Chicago had a combined total of at least 89 shootings with 24 fatalities recorded as of Tuesday morning, according to reports from local media outlets. Chicago experienced the most shootings with 34 victims wounded, including a 6-year-old boy, and at least 10 killed over the holiday weekend, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. At least 15 people were shot and six killed in Atlanta, Georgia, over the holiday weekend, including Harrison Olvey, who died after trying to stop a car theft in the city, 11Alive reported. In another incident, an 18-year old allegedly shot three adults, a 15-year-old and a 3-year-old in the presence of two other minors at their home on Sunday in a non-fatal attack before dying from a self-inflicted gun wound, according to 11Alive.

“These people are just shooting people for nothing, over nothing,” Brad Olvey, a relative of Harrison Olvey, said, according to 11Alive. “What are you going to get?”

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at least 18 people were shot, including three killed, between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4, preliminary police reports from the area showed. Victims included one minor, a 16-year-old boy who was shot multiple times in the face, neck, leg and body, according to NBC10 Philadelphia.

“We continue to monitor the crime trends and work closely with our partners in combating crime,” Philadelphia’s police department told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement. “We will deploy and adjust our resources as needed  to effectively combat crime, without hindering our 911 response to other emergencies.”

Shooters in D.C. killed at least five people, including a 15-year-old found dead in his own home, and wounded seven others over Labor Day weekend, WUSA 9 CBS reported. Homicides in the city are currently up 26% compared to 2022, according to The Washington Post.

The Chicago Mayor’s Office, the Chicago Police Department, the Metropolitan Police Department, the Mayor’s Office for Washington, D.C., the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Mayor’s office did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment. The Philadelphia Mayor’s Office referred the DCNF to the police department.
