Jamie Foxx made an emotional return to the stage Monday night after suffering from a serious, mysterious illness.

The famous actor and comedian addressed his fans at the Critics Choice Association Awards Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino & AAPI Achievements.

“I’ve been through something. I’ve been through some things,” he said. “You know, it’s crazy. I couldn’t do that six months ago. I couldn’t actually walk,” Foxx said in the opening of his 12-minute speech.

The 55-year-old Oscar winner accepted the Vanguard award, marking the first time he walked across a stage since falling ill in April.

The live audience immediately rose to their feet and gave him a standing ovation in recognition of his comeback.

He continued to fight back tears while he spoke but made sure to sprinkle in some humor as he quipped about his challenging medical struggle.

“I cherish every single minute now — it’s different,” Foxx said.

He touched on the severity of his health issue and drew on his experience as a source of encouragement to look toward a better future.

“I wouldn’t wish what I went through on my worst enemy because it’s tough when it’s almost over … when you see the tunnel. I saw the tunnel — I didn’t see the light.”

“I have a new respect for life. I have a new respect for my art. I watched so many movies and listened to so many songs trying to have the time go by,” Foxx said. (RELATED: Jamie Foxx Speaks Out Amid Sexual Assault Allegations)

“Don’t give up on your art, man. Don’t give up … and don’t let ’em take the art from you, either,” Foxx said.

Foxx spoke extensively about his journey and told tales of interactions he had with loved ones during his recovery period.
