Legendary Rocker Patti Smith Cancels Tour Dates Due To Reported Medical Issue

Legendary rock artist and poet Patti Smith was reportedly hospitalized in Italy due to a medical illness and has since canceled a series of live shows.

The 76-year-old star fell ill Tuesday while in Bologna, Italy, according to the Italian media outlet TGCOM24. She was supposed to perform Tuesday at Teatro Duse and was put under observation at a hospital. She was discharged after 24 hours and has since been instructed by doctors to rest and recover, according to TGCOM24.

“With great regret, we inform the kind audience that the [Patti Smith] concert scheduled for today 12 December 2023 at 9 pm will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist,” Teatro Duse wrote to their Instagram page.

The theater apologized for the sudden change of plans.

“We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the artist,” it continued.

The exact nature of Smith’s health concerns have not been revealed as of Thursday morning. It is unclear if she underwent any medical procedures during her hospitalization.

The famous artist is scheduled to perform a series of American tour dates beginning Dec. 27 in Chicago. It’s unclear if she will be back in action at that time.

The theater posted options for fans that have already purchased tickets to the canceled show on their social media account, with the promise of updates as more information becomes available.
