Will Smith is gearing up for a thrilling ride after he landed the lead role in the upcoming action-packed movie “Sugar Bandits,” The Hollywood Reporter (THR) reported.

The film will reportedly draw its roots from Chuck Hogan’s novel “Devils in Exile.” The narrative is yet to be fully disclosed but promises to delve into the depths of crime and suspense, according to THR. The story orbits around Neal Maven, a Bostonian and Iraq War veteran, who finds himself in dire straits, job-wise, upon returning home. In an unexpected twist, he bands together with fellow soldiers to outwit local drug dealers, setting the stage for a high-stakes drama.

AGC Studios is backing the film, which is currently on the lookout for a director to helm the venture, the outlet added. The film’s production is underway, with Smith and Jon Mone at the production reins for Westbrook Studios, and Ryan Shimazaki supervising the project’s progression. The screenplay is written by Hogan, who is renowned for his work on “The Town” and “13 Hours.” (RELATED: Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals She Was Separated From Will Smith For Years Before The Oscars Slap)

Previously, the adaptation rights for “Sugar Bandits” were held by Universal Pictures, with Joe Carnahan once in discussions to direct, as previously reported by THR. Smith’s recent film endeavors include “Emancipation,” a historical thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua and released by Apple TV+.

This marks his return to the screen following the highly-publicized Oscar slap. Smith’s future ventures include the much-anticipated continuations of the “Bad Boys” saga and “I Am Legend,” according to THR.
